Along the Agagawa River (Ougawa) in Shimogo Town, a bizarre cliff appears as if towers are lined up. That is the 'Tower of Hetsuri'. 'Hetsuri' is a term in the Aizu dialect meaning 'cliff and steep path'. This landscape, created over an unimaginable span of one million years through river erosion and weathering, was recognized for its rare geological value in 1943 (Showa 18) and designated as a national natural monument.
The white rock face has peculiar depressions, and depending on the angle of view, it can be likened to 'Elephant Tower' or 'Lion Tower', among others.
Inside the cave, the 'Kokuzo Bosatsu' (Bodhisattva of the Void), long revered by the local people, is enshrined.
The flow of water carves through the rocks, and the wind shapes them. For over eighty years since its designation as a natural monument, the 'Natural Tower' continues to overwhelm people with its unchanged form. Why not visit Hetsuri's land to spend some time listening to the breath of the Earth?
