Attractions of History and Culture
Iiwase Yumoto Onsen's 'Thatched Roof' Inn
The most iconic historical landscape of the village.
It has a history of 1200 years since its opening during the Heian period.
Founded in the late Edo period, it is designated as a registered tangible cultural property of the country.
Onabe Shrine
Onabe Shrine is deeply connected to the shadowy part of Japanese history, the 'Legend of the Heike's Refugees'.
About 800 years ago, the Heike clan, defeated in the Genpei War, is said to have hidden here.
The name comes from their vow to rise again, burying their important weapons and treasures in a 'large pot'.
Due to the legend that digging up the 'large pot' would bring a curse, it has been preserved for hundreds of years without being disturbed.
This is the most mysterious spot in the village.
